DHIC VAN ID

Happy Idea (Object Lessons After Raymond Roussel) - Todd Bartel

Happy Idea (Object Lessons After Raymond Roussel) was created using GarageBand software and a Macintosh laptop keyboard to play all the instrumentation along with dozens of sound loops and canned effects. Made with 15 tracks, Happy Idea (Object Lessons After Raymond Roussel) was created as an “assisted readymade”—using the assistance of instrumentation in conjunction with industrially prepared material—in order to pay homage to Marcel Duchamp’s initial designation of "Bicycle Wheel" as a readymade, and his subsequent re-designation of "Bicycle Wheel" as an assisted readymade. Thus, Happy Idea may be considered an assisted sound collage.

Happy Idea is the first part of a diptych work that celebrates the importance of Marcel Duchamp's contributions to the history of art. The second part is titled Retinalmade and Readymade.

Credits: assembled and recorded by Todd Bartel using a laptop computer as a keyboard and Garageband software.
